How abuse is prevented?
Most physical abuse occurs when the parent loses control. So, here are some tips to keep you calm.
1. Count to 10. If necessary, count to 50, or 75, or 100. Breathe deeply while you are counting.
2. Send your child to his room.
3. Call someone; a friend, a family or church member. There are local and national hotlines available for parents who feel they may be about to lose control.
4. If at all possible, get away from your child for a few minutes. Call a friend or a neighbor and ask them to watch your child for 20 minutes. Go take a walk.
5. Make a list of numbers that you can call in the event that you begin to lose control. Keep it next to your other emergency numbers.
